To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many and what percentage of NHS trusts(a) currently have staff classified as nursing assistants or nursing auxiliaries and (b) have incorporated nursing assistants or nursing auxiliaries into a health care assistants scheme. [69792]

There were a total of 424 National Health Service Trusts in England as at 30 September 1997. Of these, 383 (90.3 per cent. of the total number of trusts) employed staff classified as nursing assistants and/or nursing auxiliaries.

It is a matter for local decision as to whether trusts incorporate nursing assistants or nursing auxiliaries into health care assistant schemes. No figures are kept centrally.
