HL Deb 08 February 1999 vol 597 cc4-5WA
Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked the Chairman of Committees:

What is the estimate of the number of gallons of water which came from the pipes above room 203 on 25 January; and what was the cause of the emission. [HL810]

The Chairman of Committees

The estimate of the volume of water is some 20 gallons. The emission was caused when a contractor failed to check pipework sufficiently before making an alteration.

Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked the Chairman of Committees:

Which rooms and corridors suffered damage from the pipes above room C203 on 25 January; which departments required remedial repair work; and what is the initial estimate of the cost of repairing the damage. [HL811]

The Chairman of Committees

Rooms C101, C203, C205 and the Committee Corridor outside Room 6 suffered water damage. These rooms are used by the House of Lords Library. The initial estimate of the cost of remedial repair work is £ 5,000, and this has been charged to the contractor involved.

Lord Cocks of Hartcliffe

asked the Chairman of Committees:

Whether paintings were damaged as a result of the emission from the pipes above room C203 on 25 January; if so, which paintings; whether any of them were on loan; if some of them were on loan, from where; and whether the lenders have been notified. [HL812]

The Chairman of Committees

The two oil paintings of William Wentworth and Thomas Cubits were removed from the wall for their own safety. Their condition was checked by a conservator. No damage was found. They are on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, which has been notified.
