Mr. Letwin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the total funding at current prices, made available or planned to Scottish police forces for each year from 1998–99 to 2001–02(a) from central Government and (b) via local authorities; and if he will make a statement. [54929]

Mr. McLeish

Grant Aided Expenditure (GAE) figures and budgets for the Scottish police forces for 1998–99 are shown in the table.

£ million
GAE Agreed budget set by police authorities
Central 31.559 30.607
Dumfries and Galloway 19.353 19.353
Fife 37.631 36.028
Grampian 59.171 59.171
Lothian and Borders 124.833 124.833
Northern 36.465 34.074
Strathclyde 328.336 328.336
Tayside 53.652 52.536
Total 691.000 684.938

The GAE levels for the police in Scotland for future years have been set as follows:

£ million
Year GAE
1999–2000 714.7
2000–01 741.9
2001–02 762.8

Decisions have not yet been made about the split of the GAE for individual forces for these three years. Central Government pay police grant of 51 per cent. of actual expenditure up to the specified GAE limit. Local authorities meet the balance with the assistance of revenue support grant from central Government. The amount of revenue support grant paid on police expenditure is not separately identifiable because it is paid on the total eligible expenditure of each local authority.
