Mr. Denzil Davies

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his oral statement of 14 July 1998,Official Report, column 193, what proportion of the £290 million extra resources will come from savings made through cutting quangos. [54926]

Mr. Byers

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has been allocated £290 million extra resources over the next three years. Further details were announced and consultation papers were issued on 24 July, explaining that, in return for the additional funding, cultural, heritage, tourism and sports organisations will be expected to reform, cut bureaucracy including streamlining quangos and meet the Government's objectives of improving access and achieving excellence. Proposals were set out for new streamlined structures in the arts, in film and in museums and libraries, and to streamline the public body structure in the built heritage, tourism and sports. Final decisions will be made in the light of this consultation.
