Mr. Chope

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many(a) men and (b) women employed by (1) his Department and (2) his Department's agencies have contracts of employment which permit them to retire after their 60th birthday. [53056]

Dr. Howells

[holding answer 30 July 1998]: The normal retirement age of staff in the Senior Civil Service is 60, as it is for staff in Pay Band C (senior managers) and Pay Band B (junior and middle managers). Staff in Pay Band A (administrative and support staff) have a normal retirement age of 65. The headquarters of the Department currently has 445 men and 694 women in this Pay Band.

I have asked Chief Executives of the Department's Agencies to reply to the hon. Member separately.

Letter from David Hendon to Mr. Christopher Chope, dated 19 October 1998: I have been asked by the President of the Board of Trade to reply to the above Parliamentary Question with information about the Radiocommunications Agency. The Radiocommunications Agency currently employs 50 men and 72 women whose Terms and Conditions of Employment permit them to retire after their 60th Birthday.

Letter from Ian Jones to Mr. Christopher Chope, dated 19 October 1998: I have been asked to reply in respect of the Employment Tribunals Service (ETS) to your question of 24 July 1998 to the President of the Board of Trade asking how many staff were employed on contracts which permit them to retire after their 60th birthday and how many staff aged over 60 were employed within the ETS. On the 1st January 1998 the ETS employed 161 men and 372 women whose contracts permit them to retire after their 60th birthday. Of these nine men and nine women were aged over 60.

Letter from John Holden to Mr. Christopher Chope, dated July 1998: In response to your Parliamentary Question concerning contracts of employment permitting staff to retire after their 60th birthday, I can confirm that in the Companies House Agency we have:

  1. A) 249 men
  2. B) 581 women.

Letter from Dr. Seton Bennett to Mr. Christopher Chope, dated July 1998: The President of the Board of Trade has asked me to reply on behalf of the National Weights and Measures Laboratory to your questions about the number of men and women employed by the Agency who have contracts of employment which permit them to retire after their 60th birthday, and the number of men and women employed by the Agency who were over 60 on 1st January 1998. Consistent with the Departmental policy, the right to retire in NWML after 60 is linked to grade/range. Staff in Band A (ranges 1–4) have a reserved right to be retained after their 60th birthday on the condition that their performance has been satisfactory. We currently employ 3 men and 12 women in ranges 1–4. One female member of staff over 60 years was employed by this Agency on 1st January 1998 on the basis of the reserved right for her grade/range.

Letter from Peter Joyce to Mr. Christopher Chope, dated July 1998: The President of the Board of Trade has asked me to reply to your questions about 1) how many people within The Insolvency Service have contracts of employment which permit them to retire after their 60th birthday and 2) how many people aged over 60 years were employed by The Insolvency Service on 1 January. The Insolvency Service currently employs 447 women and 244 men whose contracts of employment permit them to retire after their 60th birthday. On 1st January 1998, 8 women and 22 men aged over 60 years were employed by The Insolvency Service.
