HC Deb 19 October 1998 vol 317 c1033W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what plans he has to introduce measures for the protection of the British music industry against CD piracy over the Internet. [53595]

Dr. Howells

[holding answer 30 July 1998]: United Kingdom copyright law already protects music and other material which is transmitted over the internet, and the UK is supporting work at EU and international level to ensure comparable levels of protection elsewhere. The Government are working closely with the music industry on this issue and on action against CD piracy more generally. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport is responsible for wider issues concerning the music industry, whilst my Department is responsible for copyright legislation.
