Ms Hewitt

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Director of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Steve Webb, dated 19 October 1998: I have been asked to reply to your recent question asking by what means tabulations of data from the British Household Panel Survey will be made available to honourable Members. The British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and conducted by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (formerly the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-social Change). The data are available from the Data Archive at Essex University. Further information on the BHPS, and details of research which has been carried out using the data, can be obtained from the Institute for Social and Economic Research (telephone number 01206 872957). Tabulations from the BHPS are regularly published in two annual Government Statistical Service publications: Households Below Average Income (the latest edition was published on 15 October 1998) and Social Trends. Data are also published in the ESRC Working Papers series. These publications and papers are available in the House of Commons Library.
