HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 cc757-8W
17. Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what assessment he has made of the fairness of the present methods used by universities to select students. [59119]

Mr. Mudie

The selection of students is a matter for individual universities, but the Department, UCAS and other agencies monitor and analyse the overall profile of student entry. We encourage all universities and colleges to be flexible and imaginative in assessing the potential of applicants, so that selection is fair to applicants from all backgrounds.
