HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 cc816-7W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the meeting of the Organisation of African Unity in Burkina Faso concerning the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea. [60476]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

At the meeting on 7-8 November in Ouagadougo, a committee of the Organisation of African Unity presented to Ethiopia and Eritrea a set of proposals for the peaceful resolution of the border demarcation dispute that exists between them.

We have made clear to the OAU and to both parties that Britain, together with EU partners, fully supports the OAU mediation efforts. We hope the OAU proposals may form the basis for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. We welcome Ethiopia's formal acceptance of them, and look to Eritrea to indicate similar acceptance.
