HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 c816W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment his Department has made of the current human rights situation in Indonesia. [60473]

Mr. Fatchett

While welcoming a number of positive developments since May (the release of many political prisoners, trade union reform and a greater freedom of expression), we remain concerned about the overall human rights situation in Indonesia, particularly in the light of recent events. We regret the loss of life and the injuries that resulted from the use of force against demonstrators. We have urged the authorities to show restraint. We are encouraged by the steps towards democratic reform taken at last week's session at the People's Consultative Assembly, including the commitment to hold early elections in May or June next year.

Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the recent student demonstrations in Indonesia. [60497]

Mr. Fatchett

We regret the loss of life and injuries resulting from the use of force against demonstrators in Jakarta and elsewhere in Indonesia. We have urged the authorities to show restraint.
