HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 c835W
Mr. Todd

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what assessment he has made of the effectiveness of landfill tax credit as a means of supporting projects beneficial to the environment; and if he will review the entitlement of local authority schemes to benefit from the credit. [60698]

Mr. Meale

The Government welcome the strong support for the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme expressed by respondents to their review of the tax last year. The scheme is proving to be a success with £72 million contributed towards environmental bodies in the last financial year (1997–98).

My Department is presently fully involved in reviewing the scheme to consider whether it could further be improved and in particular whether it could be amended to bring recycling within its scope, for example to support Local Authority recycling. If any changes result from this review they will be announced in Spring 1999.
