To ask the Prime Minister, pursuant to his answer of 28 October 1998,Official Report,

column 171, what are the criteria for determining the appropriateness of the Euro Preparations Unit producing information packs for schools. [59857]

The Prime Minister

The purpose of the Government's communication campaign is to ensure UK businesses are aware of the implications of the introduction of the single currency from 1 January 1999.

A number of schools have requested copies of our fact-sheets, primarily for pupils on business studies and economics courses. No information packs have been specifically produced for schools.

The criterion for determining the focus of our information campaign is its effectiveness in raising business awareness of the advent of the euro next year. The focus and effectiveness of the campaign are things we keep under review.
