HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 cc725-6W
Mr. Townend

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total cost to public funds of claims by employees and the public for compensation in respect of(a) personal injury and (b) employment protection in the last year for which figures are available. [59058]

Mr. Straw

There are no centrally maintained records for all these types of compensation. Delegation of personnel functions and of authority to make such awards has resulted in less central record keeping. To obtain all the information requested would require an extensive trawl of personnel records which could be done only at disproportionate cost.

Awards under section 11 of the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme, in respect of personal injury to employees, totalled £822,594 during the period April 1998–September 1998. Compensation awarded by the Civil Service Appeal Board totalled £26,270 during the year 1997–98.
