HC Deb 19 November 1998 vol 319 c866W
Mr. Duncan Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security in what circumstances, under the single gateway to benefit, attendance at the interview with a special adviser will not be a condition of receiving benefit. [60699]

Angela Eagle

We recognise that for some people claiming benefit an immediate interview about work may not be appropriate. For them, the priority will be to pay the benefit to which they are entitled and ensure that all their welfare needs are properly identified. The gateway seeks to treat people as individuals and avoid rigid categorisation. Everyone will be handled with sensitivity, taking account of their particular needs. In some cases, the work-focused interview may have to be deferred.
