HC Deb 18 November 1998 vol 319 cc699-700W
Miss McIntosh

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to commission studies concerning the health effects of emissions from overhead power lines on those living nearby. [59898]

Ms Jowell

Several epidemiological studies are currently under way to investigate childhood cancer in relation to various possible causes, including electromagnetic fields. The largest study of this type in this country is the United Kingdom Childhood Cancer Study which is funded in part by the Department of Health with technical support provided by the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB). The Department has also recently commissioned a study of childhood cancer and electromagnetic fields from power lines which is being undertaken by the Childhood Cancer Research Group in Oxford.
