To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to the answer of the Economic Secretary to the Treasury of 9 November 1998,Official Report, column 100, when his Department proposes to issue exemptions from landfill tax; and if he will make a statement. Exemptions to the landfill tax were considered in the last budget. A recommendation was made for the introduction of an exemption for the restoration of landfill sites and the backfilling of quarries with effect from 1 October 1999. DETR is committed to this recommendation which is currently being developed in discussion with other Government Departments. No further exemptions are being considered at this time.
