HC Deb 18 November 1998 vol 319 c680W
Mr. Baldry

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what estimates the Health and Safety Executive has made of the number of(a) fatal accidents and (b) injuries at work as a consequence of drug abuse for the last year for which figures are available. [60425]

Mr. Meale

The Health and Safety Executive has made no such estimates.

Mr. Baldry

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what research he has(a) commissioned and (b) evaluated on the impact of drug abuse on health and safety in the work place; and if he will make a statement. [60426]

Mr. Meale

The Health and Safety Executive commissioned a study of psychotropic drugs and work performance and the health implications of recreational drug use.

The Health and Safety Executive, along with other Government departments, intends to commission further research next year on the effects on performance and increased risk of accidents from alcohol and drugs—both illegal and legal, including psychoactive medication transferred into the work environment.
