To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs for what reason the European Movement was approached to help organise People's Europe '98. [59804]

Ms Quin

Decisions about the involvement of organisations in the People's Europe '98 conference were the responsibility of the organisers. We suggested to the organisers that a wide range of opinion should be represented.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the involvement of (i) the Confederation of British Industry, (ii) the Institute of Directors, (iii) the Federation of Small Businesses and (iv) the Forum of Private Business in People's Europe '98. [59803]

Ms Quin

Decisions about the involvement of representatives of civic society in the People's Europe '98 conference were the responsibility of the organisers. At our suggestion, the organisers sought to ensure that a wide range of opinion was represented, including non-governmental organisations, local government, trade unions, small business, youth organisations and academia.
