HC Deb 16 November 1998 vol 319 c345W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list the City Challenge schemes currently in operation, stating for each the number or amount of(a) private sector leverage, (b) development completed, (c) net jobs created, (d) jobs preserved, (e) land reclaimed and (f) new business start-ups. [59076]

Mr. Meale

There is only one City Challenge scheme currently in operation—North Tyneside—which, exceptionally, was granted a sixth year, until March 1999, to complete its programme. Government funding for the first round of eleven City Challenge Pacemaker partnerships came to an end in March 1997 and for 19 of the remaining 20 second round partnerships in March 1998.

The latest key outputs for North Tyneside, taken from their 1997–98 Annual Report, are: (a) £1,262.3 million private sector leverage; (b)(i) 3,027 dwellings completed/improved; (ii) 280,431 sq.m. of new/improved business and commercial floorspace; (c) 4,701 net permanent jobs created; (d) 6,281 jobs preserved; (e) 192 hectares of land reclaimed/improved; and (f) 344 new business start-ups.
