HC Deb 12 November 1998 vol 319 cc309-10W
Mr. Horam

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to increase payments to London boroughs to cover the increasing costs of coping with asylum seekers and refugees. [58968]

Mr. Hutton

My right hon. Friend the Home Secretary has set out his plans to change the cumbersome immigration and asylum process we inherited from the previous Government in the White Paper "Fairer, Faster and Firmer—A Modern Approach to Immigration and Asylum". We are considering how to improve the support grants for local authorities in the transitional period, and will announce the terms of the grants later this year.
