HC Deb 09 November 1998 vol 319 cc25-6W
Mr. Alasdair Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what consultations his Department had with the Directorate of Safety, Environment and Fire Policy at the Ministry of Defence, prior to giving consent for the laying of the Scotland-Northern Ireland electricity interconnector. [58710]

Ms Glenda Jackson

None. Consent was sought from the Department under Section 34 of the Coast Protection Act 1949. Consent under this Act is required if danger or obstruction to navigation is likely to result. The Department in making a decision under this section may consider only this question. It was concluded that the laying of the interconnector was not likely to cause such danger or obstruction and consent was accordingly given in February 1994.
