HC Deb 05 November 1998 vol 318 c642W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when he expects to announce detailed proposals on the reduction of private car traffic in central London. [58227]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Government will be giving the Mayor of London the responsibility and the powers to deal with strategic traffic issues in the capital. The Mayor will produce an integrated transport strategy for London. Boroughs will be required to produce local implementation plans to give effect to this. Meanwhile the Government are promoting initiatives in London to improve public transport and encourage use of modes other than the private car—in line with our White Paper 'A New Deal for Transport'.
