HC Deb 02 November 1998 vol 318 c417W
Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will require pharmacy advisers to monitor the use of neuroleptics in nursing and residential homes. [57631]

Mr. Milburn

We have no plans to require prescribing or pharmaceutical advisers to monitor the use of neuroleptics in nursing and residential homes. The responsibility for prescribing, including repeat prescribing and the prescribing of neuroleptics in nursing and residential homes, rests with the doctor who has clinical responsibility for that particular aspect of a patient's care. An extra safeguard is the responsibility nurses who administer the medication in nursing homes have in assessing for side effects and reporting on the effects to the prescriber.
