HC Deb 02 November 1998 vol 318 c413W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions about human rights and democratic Government took place with the Government of Bahrain during the recent ministerial visit. [57520]

Mr. Fatchett

During my visit to Bahrain in September I had a long meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al-Khalifa. Our discussions covered a broad range of subjects, including human rights issues on which I set out the Government's concerns. I welcome Bahrain's efforts to improve its human rights record by signing the Convention Against Torture and allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross to monitor prison conditions. I urged Bahrain to communicate more with human rights NGOs and journalists.
