HL Deb 05 May 1998 vol 589 cc66-7WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their attitude to the United States economic blockade of Cuba; whether there exists any international authority or approval for this; and whether they will use their good offices to help secure its removal. [HL1632]

Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean

The UK and EU believe constructive dialogue and co-operation, not isolation, is the way to promote change towards pluralist democracy in Cuba. Since 1996, we have voted in favour of the Cuban resolution at the UN condemning the US blockade. We and the EU particularly reject the extra-territorial extension of US sanctions legislation to non-US companies.
