HC Deb 16 March 1998 vol 308 c458W
Sir Raymond Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what steps he is taking to protect Welsh farmers from further falls in their income. [33713]

Mr. Win Griffiths

The Government have announced an agrimonetary aid package for the livestock industry of £85 million, of which just over £12 million will go to farmers in Wales. A further £70 million was announced in February to meet the costs of the Specified Risk Material Controls on cattle, sheep and goats and the entire start-up costs of the Cattle Traceability System.

In addition, my right hon. Friend is engaged in constructive dialogue with farmers' leaders about how a viable long-term future for Welsh agriculture can be created.
