HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 c663W
Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many Northern Ireland students are presently studying veterinary science in(a) the Irish Republic and (b) Great Britain; what estimate she has made of the number of graduates in veterinary science required in Northern Ireland in each of the next four years; and what has been the number of applicants for university places in that science from Northern Ireland in each of the last five years. [44555]

Mr. Worthington

There are 52 Northern Ireland students studying veterinary science in the Irish Republic and 115 in Great Britain. It is not possible to estimate the overall number of graduates in veterinary science required in Northern Ireland; however, it is anticipated that the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland will require the following:

  • 1998: 5
  • 1999: 3
  • 2000:3
  • 2001:3

The number of applicants for university places is:

  • Before 1994: No details available
  • 1994: 110
  • 1995: 85
  • 1996: 90
  • 1997: 92
