HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 cc662-3W
Mr. Robert McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if she will list the acts of paramilitary violence carried out in April, indicating to which paramilitary organisation the police have attributed responsibility. [42162]

Mr. Ingram

[holding answer 18 May 1998]: The following acts of paramilitary violence were carried out in April:

Offence Total number By Loyalist By Republican Unknown
Deaths 4 2 11
Shooting Incidents 18 9 8 1
Bombing Incidents 5 2 2 1
Casualties as a result of paramilitary style attacks 15 9 6
Shootings 8 3 5
Assaults 7 6 1
11 claimed by INLA

Note:

1.The RUC advise that it is not possible at present to be more specific on attribution other than for the incident claimed by INLA. Attribution is based on the information currently available and may be subject to change or adjustment. In addition there was one further shooting incident when the RUC shot at a stolen car which tried to run down a member of a patrol

2. Care should be taken not to add all incidents together as some are included in more than one heading, e. g. all four deaths were as a result of shooting incidents as were all eight paramilitary style shooting attacks
