Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his answer of 17 November 1997,Official Report, column 60, concerning administration of medication, when the review of the prescribing, supply and administration of medicines in nursing and residential care homes will be concluded and submitted to Ministers.[45430]

Mr. Milburn

The review of prescribing, supply and administration of medicines, chaired by Dr. June Crown, is currently developing its second and final report which is expected to be submitted to Ministers later this summer. The review is not focused on nursing and residential care homes. It is looking more broadly at the current arrangements under which medicines are prescribed, supplied and administered, and considering whether health professionals inside and outside the National Health Service might take on new responsibilities with regard to those functions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to his answer of 17 November 1997,Official Report, column 60, concerning information technology and prescribing, over what period PRODIGY is to be evaluated; and when decisions will be made about its extension to all general practitioner practices.[45429]
