HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 c681W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade, pursuant to the letter of 27 November from the Chief Executive of the Natural Environment Research Council to the hon. Member for Linlithgow, if she will list the new scientific opportunities arising from the merger of Merlewood and Windermere.[44046]

Mr. Battle

I am advised by NERC that the merger of the Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC) Institute of Terrestrial Ecology at Merlewood and the Institute of Freshwater Ecology at Windermere (part of NERC' s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology) provides the opportunity to bring together scientists from a wider range of disciplines to pursue research in environmental microbiology, environmental chemistry, pollutant transport, surface water acidification, and environmental monitoring.

The merger will also facilitate access to workshops, chemical analytical facilities and expertise in geographical information systems.
