HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 c635W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what proposals he has to improve(a) airport and (b) aircraft safety. [45044]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Civil Aviation Authority is responsible for the safety regulation of UK civil aircraft and airports. They constantly monitor the civil aviation industry and seek to improve safety standards by systematically defining and addressing safety risks. Consequently the UK has one of the best civil aviation safety records in the world.

The UK also plays a leading role in raising international aviation safety standards through its active membership of the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the joint Aviation Authorities. In addition, as part of the Presidency of the EU we are progressing proposals to establish a European Aviation Safety Authority.
