HC Deb 03 June 1998 vol 313 c231W
12. Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what percentage of British aid to Iraq since 1991 has been spent on administration costs; and if she has any conveniently available figures. [42509]

Clare Short

Published figures for UK humanitarian aid to Iraq do not include DFID administration costs, which come from a separate departmental budget and represent some 0.7 per cent. of this year's programme. NGOs and other agencies which we fund typically spend three to seven per cent. of project costs on headquarters administration.

I am pleased to announce that my department has just approved a much needed £2 million project to improve water and sanitation in Baghdad-controlled Iraq. This is part of the £7 million aid package for the region which I announced on 12 March 1998, Official Report, column 297.
