§ Mr. GerrardTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many appeals are currently outstanding against a refusal of an asylum claim by persons who have been granted exceptional leave to remain in the United Kingdom. [42979]
§ Mr. Mike O'BrienAs at the end of April 1998, there were estimated to be some 23,815 asylum appeals outstanding with the Immigration Appeals Authority. Of these 21,425 were appeals to the Special Adjudicators and 2,390 to the Tribunal. I regret that it is not possible, from the available information, to differentiate those appellants who were granted exceptional leave.
