To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he has reached a decision on grants to the University of Stockton. [54977]

I am pleased to advise my hon. Friend that I have today given my approval to the payment of two grants to the University College Stockton; £800,000 to endow a Chair in Urban Regeneration and Change, and £500,000 towards the construction of amenity facilities for staff and students.

I firmly believe that expanding higher education facilities into areas of economic and social disadvantage makes a vital contribution towards their development and regeneration.
