HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 cc728-9W
Mr. Swayne

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will take measures to prevent the export of fresh offal and greaves. [53571]

Mr. Rooker

The export from the UK of meat meal, bone meal and meat and bone meal of mammalian origin is prohibited by virtue of Commission Decision 98/256 concerning measures to protect against BSE. This Decision also prohibits the export of offals derived from bovine animals slaughtered in the UK, except for uses other than in food, animal feed, cosmetics, medical or pharmaceutical products. In addition, certain offals from cattle, sheep and goats are covered by national controls on specified risk material which require their destruction. Provided the conditions laid down in national or Community rules, or by the authorities in the countries to which they are dispatched, are respected, exports of other types of greaves or offal are permitted.
