HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 cc667-8W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much of the 20 per cent. of the landfill tax available through the Environmental Trust was(a) used for environmental purposes and (b) not used and retained by Customs and Excise. [54689]

Dawn Primarolo

Credits claimed at 22 July amounted to £78.4 million. In the same period (1 October 1996 to 22 July 1998) total landfill tax revenue declared was £650 million, giving rise to a maximum credit that could have been claimed of £130 million. The majority of credits are claimed at the end of landfill site operators contribution years which mainly fall between October and December.

Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much revenue was generated by the landfill tax in its first year of operation. [54690]

Dawn Primarolo

As I told my hon. Friend on 21 July 1998,Official Report, column 503, the most accurate figures I now have for revenue received in the first year of the landfill tax are £420 million gross and £396 million net of tax credits claimed.
