§ Ms Glenda JacksonWe have recently consulted on proposals to provide freedom for local traffic authorities to make 20 mph limits without the need to obtain central government consent. The responses to the consultation are currently being considered. Under the proposed new system it will be for the authorities to decide where to place 20 mph speed limits; but we would recommend that schools should be set in the context of their surrounding areas and local experience of traffic problems rather than being treated in isolation.
