HC Deb 30 July 1998 vol 317 c510W
Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what research the Government have commissioned recently into health risks of smoking in public places. [52921]

Ms Jowell

In March this year the Department published a report by the scientific committee on tobacco and health. The committee scientifically reviewed and appraised a range of important issues relating to tobacco and health, including the health effects of exposure of non-smokers to environmental tobacco smoke. The Department has not recently commissioned any separate research into the associated health risks of smoking in public places.

Copies of the report are available in the Library and are also available from Her Majesty's Stationery Office.

Mr. Syms

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will publish the evidence originating(a) domestically and (b) overseas which has been considered and rejected in the course of preparing his forthcoming White Paper on Tobacco. [53387]

Ms Jowell

The Government have received a wide range of material, from numerous sources, in connection with the forthcoming White Paper on tobacco control. There are no plans to publish that material.
