Mr. Kaufman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much his Department spent on IT, itemising(a) personal computers, (b) main-frame, (c) minicomputers and (d) file servers in the last year for which figures are available. [52885]

Mr. Milburn

The total Departmental spend, including agencies, on new items for the financial year 1997–1998, including replacement equipment for an upgrade of our internal office information system, was:

  • personal computers: £3,286,845
  • main-frame: Nil
  • mini-computers: Nil
  • file servers: £1,037,210.

Maintenance costs for these items and the outsourced mainframe services totalled £897,553 in 1997–98.
