HC Deb 30 July 1998 vol 317 c521W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what guidance his Department issues to those constructing buildings for which it is responsible on the use of materials containing asbestos. [52315]

Mr. Fatchett

For any construction projects in the UK we employ professional project managers who in turn would appoint planning supervisors under the CDM regulations. Their duty is to ensure that all guidance and legislation related to asbestos is brought to the attention of those working on the project and ensure compliance with all Health and Safety requirements.

For overseas building projects the FCO use contracts which specify performance standards which at a minimum must comply with British or EC building regulations (or local regulations where in those cases higher standards may apply).
