Dr. Stoate

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what support his Department(a) is giving and (b) plans to give to Local Agenda 21 initiatives (i) 1998–99, (ii) 1999–2000, (iii) 2000–01 and (iv) 2001–02. [52424]

Mr. Meacher

DETR's main role in the Local Agenda 21 process is to provide advice and encouragement to local authorities. In this capacity, during 1998–99 it is supporting the following, specific projectsProviding a telephone helpdesk and introductory guide for local authorities on the Eco-management and audit scheme (LA-EMAS)—£39,100. Supporting the collection and publication of best practice Local Agenda 21 case studies—£15,600. A seminar to consult on a menu of indicators of sustainable development for local use—£20,000. Contributing towards the cost of producing Sustainable local Communities for the 21st century which provides guidance to local authorities on why and how to prepare an effective Local Agenda 21 strategy—£2,600.

In addition, through Government Offices, DETR supports a range of regional projects, events and seminars to promote Local Agenda 21, expenditure on which is estimated to be £55,000 during 1998–99.

At this stage, it is not possible to provide details of spending in future years.
