HC Deb 29 July 1998 vol 317 c238W
Mr. Timms

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when he expects to announce his decisions on the applications for Transport and Works Act Orders for(a) Stratford International Station and (b) the Channel Tunnel Rail Link connection to the West Coast Main Line. [52593]

Ms Glenda Jackson

These proposed works are the subject of a single application, for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (Stratford Station and Subsidiary Works) Order. The Inspector's report following the public local inquiry into this Order is being considered by the Secretary of State. A decision will be made as soon as possible.

Mr. Timms

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will provide a breakdown of the £3 billion benefits identified in A New Deal for Transport from the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. [52592]

Ms Glenda Jackson

It is anticipated that the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) will provide £3 billion NPV of benefits to the UK comprising (with some overlaps between categories):

  • £1,800 million from time savings to UK resident Eurostar passengers;
  • £600 million from domestic services on the CTRL;
  • £120 million of environmental and decongestion benefits;
  • £1,000 million representing the regeneration programmes which would be required to deliver the same regeneration benefits as the CTRL.
