HC Deb 28 July 1998 vol 317 c201W
Mr. Alan Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence which two hunter-killer submarines are to be retired as a result of the outcome of the Strategic Defence Review. [52182]

Mr. Spellar

As a consequence of the Strategic Defence Review, HMS Splendid and HMS Spartan will be taken out of service earlier than previously planned.

Mr. Alan Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what estimate he has made of the cost of fitting each nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarine with Tomahawk missiles. [52172]

Mr. George Robertson

The overall cost of procuring Tomahawk for the Royal Navy is some £180m at 1997–98 prices. This includes the procurement of missiles, test and training systems, submarine weapon handling and fire control systems, and provision of a mission planning and targeting facility. In addition, the average cost of fitting out each submarine is estimated to be some £1.4m.
