To ask the Secretary of State for Health where frozen embryos are currently being stored; and how many have been disposed of since the implementation of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. [52977]

Mr. Milburn

There are 74 clinics licenced by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority to store embryos. These are listed.

The authority does not routinely keep central records of the number of embryos removed from storage and subsequently disposed of. The number of embryos created in the course of treatment involving in vitro fertilisation that were not frozen or used for treatment or other purposes between 1 August 1991 and 31 March 1996 was 138,450.

There are no proposals for relocating the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
