Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions when the computer system used by the DVLA was last upgraded; and what proposals he has for future developments to it. [51172]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The DVLA drivers computer system has recently been upgraded to permit the issue of photocard licences. The vehicle system is currently being upgraded and this will be completed by the end of the year. A number of other amendments and improvements are in hand including ensuring that all systems are year 2000 compliant and are responsive to customer requirements.
