§ Mr. CorbynTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the annual running costs of the Nuclear Accident Response Organisation. [21208]
§ Mr. Spellar[holding answer 17 December 1997]: The Ministry of Defence Nuclear Accident Response Organisation (NARO) would only be activated for exercises or in the event of a defence nuclear accident, using resources from a number of military commands. The occasional costs attributed to the NARO function in these commands are not separately identified. The annual manpower costs for the Headquarters element in the Ministry of Defence in London, however, amounts to £300,000 and the annual cost of support contracts provided by the Meteorological Office, Defence Evaluation and Research Agency and other associated costs amounts to some £2.5 million.
