HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 c112W
Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many non-teaching staff were employed by local education authorities in 1997. [30817]

Ms Estelle Morris

At June 1997, there were 271,000 full-time equivalent non-teaching staff employed by local education authorities in England.

Non-teaching staff includes educational support, clerical, school meals and premises related staff employed in schools and colleges, together with central services and administration within the education service. Both manual and non-manual staff are included. Staff employed in grant-maintained schools are excluded. This information comes from the Joint Staffing Watch Survey carried out by the Local Government Management Board.
