HC Deb 17 February 1998 vol 306 cc582-4W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what has been the total revenue earned by the film industry from exports in each of the last 10 years. [29410]

Mr. Tom Clarke

The revenue received from overseas film companies in the UK in respect of film production and performance in cinemas or on television for 1987 to 1996 is as follows. These are the latest 10 years for which figures are available from the Office for National Statistics:

Receipts from overseas by UK film companies in respect of film production and performance in cinemas or on television
Year £ million(current prices)
1987 264
1988 230
1989 263
1990 334
1991 290
1992 282
1993 336

Receipts from overseas by UK film companies in respect of film production and performance in cinemas or on television
Year £ million (current prices)
1994 425
1995 495
1996 522

Office for National Statistics, News Release, Overseas transactions of the film and television industry 1996, 10 October 1997.

These figures understate the total revenue received from overseas. There are earnings from other kinds of transactions measured only in aggregate, so that the film industry component is not separately identifiable. For example, profits due to UK parent companies from subsidiaries and branches overseas are included under investment income in the Balance of Payments. The figures shown above also exclude receipts by film companies for items such as management fees, merchandising and agency fees. ONS estimates are available for 1991 onwards for these "other overseas service transactions" but only for the total of such earnings by film and television companies. These figures are as follows:

Receipts by UK film and television companies for "other overseas service transactions"
Year £ million(current prices)
1991 108
1992 126
1993 162
1994 143
1995 168
1996 192
