HL Deb 17 February 1998 vol 586 c30WA
Lord Patten

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied with the working of the present divorce laws. [HL478]

The Lord Chancellor (Lord Irvine of Lairg)

The Government believe that the overall provisions in the Family Law Act 1996 will provide a better system than the present law for identifying saveable marriages, and ensuring that, where the marriage cannot be saved, couples have the necessary time and information to consider the best possible arrangements for their future lives apart.

Lord Patten

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their intention to make divorce easier. [HL477]

The Lord Chancellor

The Government have no such intention.
