Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, pursuant to his answer of 27 January 1998,Official Report, column 133, if any of the nine international events will be staged in (a) the North West or (b) Lancashire. [28454]

The World Cup in Orienteering (Events 3 & 4) will be staged in the Lake District in May, this year. The Sports Acrobatics World Championships were staged in Manchester in September 1997. Should the Football Association's bid to stage the Soccer World Cup (2006) in England be successful, it will be held at venues across the country, including the North West.

The World Disabled Athletics Championships are to be held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham from 10–17 August 1998.

The European Showjumping Championships are to be held at the Showground in Harrogate from 25–28 August 1999.

The World Orienteering Championships are to be held in Inverness and the Scottish Highlands from 1–8 August 1999.

The IAAF World Cross Country Championships are to be held in Belfast from 27–28 March 1999.
